Abstracts were made by the Surveyor General's Office from FEDERAL LAND SURVEYOR'S FIELD NOTES, RS 953.005, for use in the Shawneetown Land District Office. The method of marking each corner of an exterior section or quarter section or an interior section or quarter section is specified. The method most frequently used was either a post in mound or a witness tree showing species; diameter; directional bearing; and distance from actual corner. When bodies of water are found in townships, abstract also includes those township plats.

The Shawneetown Land District Office was created by an act of Congress on February 21, 1812. Part of the new district's land had formerly been attached to the Kaskaskia Land District; and a small portion of the Vincennes (Indiana) District was added to Shawneetown after Illinois' boundaries were established.
